The proposed women's shelter and resort site for the Altaghat Project is in the beautiful Cardamon Hills of southern India's Tamil Nadu state. The Cardamon Hills are part of the Western Ghats (see the red dot on the map). Facing west are the portion of the Western Ghats located in scenic Kerala state. The site itself borders the famous Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary and the Anamalai Forestry Reserve. The jungle is interspersed with tea and coffee plantations, located approximately 4000 feet above sea level.

Visitors to the Altaghat Project would depart from one of two possible places. The first is the historic city of Cochin (a.k.a. Ernakulam or Kochi) on the Indian Ocean in Kerala state. It has an International Airport. From Cochin it is a six hour drive up the Western Ghats to the proposed women's shelter and resort site. Most of the drive is through stunning forest and jungle, past the thunderous Athirapilly Waterfalls, and up into Tamil Nadu state. Along the way there is a good chance of observing some of India's endangered wildlife. The scenic hill town of Valparai in Tamil Nadu state is the closest major settlement to the proposed Altaghat site.
The second route is shorter. The industrial city of Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu has a domestic airport. From there one proceeds through the colorful city of Pollachi to the foot of the Cardamon Hills, which rise like a mountain from the Deccan Plain. The road proceeds up the Ghat and through the Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary to Valparai. This trip takes about three hours.
